Merbil Lake and island is a Tourists’ hot spot in Dibrugarh district of Assam

About Merbil: Situated at a distance of 13.5 km West of Naharkatia town, Dibrugarh district, Assam, Merbil Lake is basically left over of flow of the Burhi Dihing River more than 100 years ago, surrounded by Merbil village of Sasani Mouza. Since the ox-bow shaped Lake is formed naturally, the heart of the lake can be called as a mini island. The island is connected through only a narrow corridor with the surrounding villages.
Normally, preference has been given by the people for boating to cross the lake towards island. Hence, now-a-days, it is become an attractive tourists’ hot spot in Upper Assam during the winter season

Attractions: Variety of migratory birds and the leafy trees are the most attraction of the Lake. Normally, variety of aquatic birds is always seen in the Lake though out the year. However, the number of these birds increases during the month of September to  April. Hence, this period is most preferable for the visitors.

Recently, an Eco-Tourism project is going to be set up there by the Department of Tourism, Government of Assam with the sponsorship of Oil India Limited.
In the initial stage, couple of beautiful Chang Ghar has been made ready in the midst of the Island to welcome tourists towards the Lake which is including the attractive Rest houses and Dining rooms made of natural woods and bamboos.

Taking taste of some of the traditional Assamese dishes prepared from locally available vegetables surrounding the lake is an another attraction for the visitors.

Boating facility for site view as well as birds view and fishing over the lake is also one of the main attractions for the visitors.  

How to reach: Naharkatia town is directly connected through Rail and Road from Dibrugarh, Duliajan, Tinisukia, Namrup and Sivasagar. To and fro Local transport by road is available from Naharkatia town to Merbil village to reach the spot. It is 13.5 km away from the Naharkatia town to reach the Merbil Lake by road.

For the nature lovers and the people interested in Eco-Tourism, Merbil Lake and Island is now turning to be the hot spot and the most preferred Tourists’ location in the state of Assam, particularly in Dibrugarh district of Upper Assam.

  1. This is a great blog with huge information about Merbil Lake and island. All images are outstanding. It seems that it’s a great spot for bird watching, boating and fishing too. I love to visit these king of lakes and after washington dc bus tours must visit there. One thing is essential during this trip, yes, it’s your camera. With this your trip would be incomplete. This is the best time to go there and enjoy with your beloved family.
