Fish Tomato Curry - Try it in Assamese way

Ingredients:

  • 500 grams fresh rohu or bahu fish cut into medium sized pieces
  • 4 medium sized tomatoes
  • 1 small piece of medium sized bottle gourd (lao in Assamese)
  • 1 tablespoon chopped coriander leaves
  • The juice of half a lemon
  • About two and a half tablespoons mustard oil
  • A pinch of turmeric powder
  • Salt as required
  • One-fourth tsp mustard seeds
  • 4 cups of water
Method: Rub salt and turmeric powder on to the fish and fry in two tbsp of oil and keep aside. Chop the tomatoes and cut the gourd into very fine pieces or grate coarsely. Put the remaining mustard oil in the cooking bowl in which the fish was fried and heat well. Add the mustard seeds and when they crackle put in the gourd and fry on low heat. When the gourd is tender, add the tomatoes and continue to cook on low heat. Add salt and turmeric powder and when the tomatoes are soft and of a puree consistency, add the water and increase the heat. When the water boils, reduce heat, put in the lemon juice and fish and cook for about 15 minutes. Finally add the coriander leaves and remove from heat.
