The
Women Studies and Development Cell (WSDC) of Sibsagar College, Joysagar has organized Inter College Chorus
Competition amongst the teaching and non-teaching staff of colleges under the Dibrugarh University on 17th May 2014 at the College premises. This
has been a good trend and effort in cultural field
extending beyond teaching life unleashing the interest and talent of the people engaged in academic arena.

The chorus competition has been inaugurated by Syed Sadulla, popular singer, lyricist, guitarist and radio artist. People fond of music would surely like to add his name with the unforgettable Assamese song “Borokha tumi ahana, ei madhur bela....”

Before the commencement of the actual competition the welcome speech has been delivered by Ms. Hira
Deka Borah, Principal of Sibsagar College welcoming all the participants,
guests, the benign audience and the panel of judges consisting Syed Sadulla,
Dr. Anjana Sarma and Jayanta Dutta.
Apart
from the competition, a series of melodious songs has also been performed by
renowned singers making the programme more glorious, such as, Gazal by Syed
Sadulla, Syeda Juri Rahman, Dr. Anjana Sarma, Dr. Nirupama Bhattacharya, Jayanta
Hazarika’s song by Jayanta Dutta, performance of popular singer Ms. Kukila
Goswami, who is famous for the Assamese song “Puhaniya Saraiti Urile”.

After completion of the chorus competition schedule, winners have been declared and prize
distribution ceremony has been held. The team of D.C.B. Girls’ College, Jorhat
has been adjusted First Prize containing a trophy and a cash prize of Rupees Five Thousand. It is noteworthy that the team D.C.B. Girls’ College, Jorhat was also
awarded First Prize in the intra Jorhat District Chorus Competition organized
by Women Cell of Jagannath Barooah College, Jorhat on 13th May,
2014.
The
Second prize containing a trophy and a cash prize Rupees three thousand has been
awarded to Sibsagar College, Joysagar. The Third Place has been owned by Sivasagar
Girls’ College and awarded with a trophy and a cash prize of Rupees Two Thousand.

In
culmination of all schedules the vote of thanks has been offered by Dr. Mayashree
Goswami, Secretary of WSDC of Sibsagar College, Joysagar and thus this
magnificent event has come to an end for this time. This has been a wonderful
and enthusiastic effort made by the WSDC of Sibsagar College promoting the spirit
of music and culture, discussing and sharing different issues for development
of women in particular and the society at large.
Sibsagar College, Joysagar and Sivasagar Town at a Glance
Sibsagar College, situated about 5 km south-west of Sivasagar Town by the side
of the historic Joysagar Tank which reminds the 17th century’s Ahom
Queen Sati Joymati, is a premier institute of higher education in Sivasagar
District, Assam. It was established in the year 1947, the year of independence.
Since then, it has been enlightening the society with impressive academic
output in “quest for light.” With a strong infrastructural support spread along
103 bighas of land, the College has been providing general education among the
masses of the entire upper Assam in particular and the people of the North-East India in general.
Sivasagar
is one of the prominent towns of business, tourism and education in the eastern
part of Assam with rich aesthetic appeal, blessed with a glorious historical
background like capital Rangpur which was the fourth capital of the Ahom Kingdom. The historical monuments lying scattered in and around Sivasagar Town are Sivasagar Tank, Shiva
Dole, Rang Ghar, Talatal Ghar, Joysagar Tank, Joy Dole, etc. which are the testimony of the past glory.

The
lush green tea gardens mesmerize the onlookers everywhere in Sivasagar District.
The district has highest number of oil fields in Assam which are producing
crude oil and natural gas by premier energy section industries of India like
ONGC, GAIL, etc.
