Know About the Oldest ‘Bakhar Bengena’ Tree

The name of the tree is called as ‘Bakhar Bengena’ in Assamese language. ‘Bakhar’ is to be representative as illumination and ‘Bengena’ means brinjal which is to be representative as bulb. The age of the tree is accounted to be 700 years old. Its height is approximately 30 feet. According to a prevailing belief this oldest tree was planted by famous Bahari King Mahamanikya of Jayantipur.

Famous botanist of India, U. N. Kanchilan discovered this legendary tree in the year 1939 and provided its scientific name as ‘Rendia Ulizinsa.’

The location of this oldest tree is in a village under the Bakata/Patsaku area, a few kilometers distance from the district headquarters of the Sivasagar district of Assam. But for the name of the tree the name of the village is also known as Bakhar Bengena.

The ‘Bakhar Bengena’ tree is one of the attractions in the historic Sivasagar district with numerous archaeological properties. It is stated that the Ahom Kings of Assam preserved this tree. Although some people states that such kind of tree are seen in lower part of Assam in Kamrup district, this particular 'Bakhar Bengena' tree may also be one of the oldest living trees on earth, but scientific dating systems like Radiocarbon Dating or Genetic Matching Methodology will be able to ascertain about the exact age of the tree. Hence, due attention is required from the authority concerned for proper recognition.
