Mother I Want Apong

By Dipok Kumar Doley

Mother
Never thinks that he is not near you
See here, I am always at your side
Do I have to promise to stay by your side forever
The sheafs of grain that you reaped
Diring the winter is still wet
I am still smoothing out the bamboo pole
With my father
To bring in the sheafs

Watch mother, how the golden sheafs dance on
My bow-arched pole
Mother, the fountain of your love that is he
My father
Don’t wait at the doorstep everyday awaiting his return
Till late midnight by the hearth
He has not gave the man untrodden by man
So don’t invoke God to follow in the foot
Steps of father
Then-five years ago how father left for
Salbil one day for fishing without any information
For a week and never return
Mother, father is not among us
I do want to play again
Following his footsteps, I too learnt to
Tie the shefts of grain
Learnt to drink Apong
Mother
I want Apong
Now-
I want it.
