Lalilang Maestro 'Telpung'
“Toiye Herow Lalilang Oi
Ghoror Jonir Gali Khang Oi
Ebati Koi Modoke Oi Diya
Modore Nichate Oi
Bagori Nu Porilu Oi
Tirir Aji Gali Oi Khalu”

The most popular folk songs and dance in Assam, Lalilang is the innate ethnic anatomy of culture and traditions of Dimoria in the outskirt of Guwahati city. In our published issue for January-February 2015, we wrote something about this magnificent and unadulterated ethnic culture and this time also, we are adding few more words about Lalilang for his fond memory of respected Telpung - a common man, but a maestro of Lalilang songs and dance, to pay tribute to him, who left for heavenly abode on 7th September, 2015 at about 90 years of age. Late Shri Jugeswar Pator of Senabor village under Khetri P.S. was popularly known with his nickname, Telpung. The second person in Dimoria to receive the coveted ‘Silpi’ pension of Government of Assam, Telpung was also awarded ‘Dhanjit Medhi Memorial Award’ - an honour at regional level for his dedication and contribution in folk culture.

The unique kind of traditional songs and dance, Lalilang is prevalent as an inherent socio-cultural aspect in Dimoria where community fishing is a common feature at Guripathar near Barahu Railway Station in the eve of Kongali Bihu and in the beels like Jalixora, Bomani and Parxali situated in different parts of Dimoria on the day of Uruka of Magh Bihu. Lalilang songs and dance create hues while people enjoy and go for community fishing.

Generally people of Dimoria speak unique type of Assamese dialect, which is absent in general Assamese conversation. Composed with such kind of Dimorian words, the language of Lalilang songs may not be so decent literally, but people like it very much and accept it claiming Lalilang as ethnic identity of Dimoria.

Telpung was expert in creating and singing Lalilang. He never hesitated his way of entertaining people with Lalilang. So people cannot deny his devotion and contribution on this folk culture of Dimoria. Sometimes he was also seen accompanied by Nigru, another name with deep attachment in Lalilang. Many tourists visiting from abroad in festive occasions were impressed on this local culture and even tried sometimes mingling themselves with the dance-beats of Lalilang. Now the absence of Telpung, it will undoubtedly be felt a loss which is irreparable, but at the same time, people of Dimoria must understand his sense to be more committing towards upholding the Lalilang in the social change. We pray that the departed soul may rest in eternal peace!
