This book is a collection of research based articles on Tai ethnic groups of Brahmaputra valley edited by Dr. Jyotirekha Hazarika.It is a commendable work consisting of research based articles with a prefatory note by Gunaram Nath, President, ACTA, Jorhat Zone.

This book is an indepth study of the Tai Ethnic group taking into consideration the political, social, linguistic and cultural factors. From 1226 BC to 18th century various groups of the Tai Ethnic tribe migrated to India and they co mingled socially, politically, culturally and linguistically with the people of Assam. Hence they were known as ‘Tai-Ethnic Group from the Brahmaputra Valley.”

The book provides a glimpse into the language, society and cultureof the Tai Ethnic community of Assam.Further the book provides a detailed history of migration, language, literature and culture of the six communities of the Tai Ethnic group.

These communities are Tai Ahom, Tai khamti, Tai Phaki, Tai Aiton, Tai Turung and Tai khamyang. The editor has done an excellent job in compilling the various research papers touching all the issues in a new volume for ready reference. There are nineteen research papers published in Assamese as well in the English language. In the Assamese section writers like Dr. Sukh Barua, Dr. Upen Rabha Hakasam, Dr. Mamoni Bora Kharghoria, Dr Balin Handique, Dr. Niva Das, Dr Prabin Saikia, Dr Biju Moran,Dr Nabami Gogoi,Dr. Anjali Chutia Saikia, Rashmi Buragohain, Dr Ajanta Rajkhowa, Madhumita Chetia,Gitali Buragohain, Dr Jyotirekha Hazarika makes a bold attempt to touch certain relevant issues of the Tai Ethnic community.

In the english section writers likeDr S.N.Goswami, Dr Bhim Kanta Baruah , Dr Girin Phukan , Suresh Gogoi and Dr. Bishwajit Das wrote some essays of the the Tai Ethnic communities. Overall this book is likely to explore newer areas of research of the Tai – Ethnic Group from the Brahmaputra Valley.


About the reviewer: Mrs Pranami Bania is at present working as the Asstt. Professor, Deptt. of English, J.B. College, Jorhat. She is a poet, critic , writer and researcher.She has completed two minor research project on “ Aesthetic Material Culture of the Satras in the mediaeval Assamese society with special reference to Satras in Majuli” and “ Classroom Management Education Scenario” approved by UGC and IGNOU. She is at present working on her third research project on “Fictionalising and   revisiting  Characters  from History: A feminist reading of Nirupama Borgohain’s select works approved by UGC. Mrs Bania has published quite a good number of research papers in national and international journals.She has presented more than twenty papers in national and international journals.
