FERDINAND DE SAUSSURE: SADHARAN BHASA VIGYANAR PATH

 By Ranjan Gogoi

Swiss linguist Ferdinand de Saussure’s revolutionary book Course in General Linguistics (Cours de linguistique generale), a series of lectures delivered by him in Geneva University, was published posthumously in 1916 by his two former disciples and junior colleagues. The book was not merely remarkable for its practice on systematic and scientific studies on language, but for its philosophical and theoretical insights. It has been considered as the basis of contemporary critical theories like structuralism, post-structuralism, deconstruction etc. and has opened newer dimensions to the study of language and literature. Dr. Pona Mahanta, formerly Professor and Head of the Department of English, Dibrugarh University, Assam, is commendable for his endeavour in translating this revolutionary book into Assamese as Sadharan Bhasa Vigyanar Path (1st Edition, December 2014, pp.1- 234 and price Rs. 200/- only) and  has provided an easy access to Assamese students, research scholars and teachers with Saussure’s linguistic concepts. He has selected the English translation by Wade Baskin from many other English versions for the purpose translating it into Assamese. It is Dr. Mahanta’s great contribution to the field of linguistic studies in the North East India known for its linguistic diversity. Regional researches in linguistics will be highly benefitted and can go ahead being safely guided by Saussure’s linguistic theories and concepts as a model in the field of studies on languages like Assamese and other regional languages of the North East India. It is not at all an easy task to translate such a lasting book into a regional language. But Dr. Mahanta has shown a mature hand with his deep knowledge on the subject and successfully overcome all incongruities. This book will undoubtedly have an everlasting effect on studies of Assamese and other regional languages.
