MOTHER…

 By Dipok Kr. Doley

You were working without rest
Just like the wind
From dusk till dawn
For me

And I
Used to run for my school
At the end of the village
Day after day while
Memorizing the spellings

Mother
I did my studies
At the corner of the Changghor
Renaissance
French Revolution
Russian Revolution
Industrial Revolution
You drank Apong with my father
And gave me courage

And mother
I read
The letters of my brother, and his
Hemingway, Chekhov, Gorki
Lorka, Henry, Gogol, Balzak
Birsa, Bishnu Rabha
And used to look at
His painting-
Sansar Sagarar Paar nepalo bisari
“The Mysteries of Life”

Mother what did you want
From the son of a farmer
Balmiki,Vyas,
Sankardev, Madhabdev

Went to the field quite early
Reached school when the sun was strong
Mother, I did not feel tired
For your dry face was
Full of love and affection

Did not have any time for leisure
Plunged into the Swamps
With the buffalos
To get more love and care
From you
Mother...
