TUNI, THE ETHEREAL

By Uttam Boruah

O gods of dews, tear your hearts
And shed one after another…
O gods of wood, burn your limbs
And swallow one after another…
Tears of blood, drinks of blood.

I invoke thee, Saraswati
The river, the voice…
Suppressed, oppressed!
Bow down, don’t you irrigate life?
I invoke you, Tuni
The creeper, the poise…
Lavished, cherished
Slow down, you father river’s wife.
Sprinkle your life at the gods’ blood-stained eye.
They become arrogant and they shall die!

(Tuni is the only river running through Majuli)
