Abstract
Women empowerment means liberation of women from the vicious grips of social, economical, political, caste and gender-based discrimination. It means providing women the freedom and power to make different choices of life. Women’s economic empowerment implies a better quality of material life through sustainable livelihoods owned and managed by them and thereby reducing their financial dependence on their male counterparts by making them a significant part of the human resource. This research article primarily deals with the extent of the empowerment of women with respect to their livelihood pattern. In other words, how the nature of occupation impacts on women empowerment. The geographical area selected for the study is Nagaon district of Assam. The study is based on primary data. The sample size selected for the study is 350. The target group population selected for the study is women belonging to the age group of 18-60 years. Fussy set technique has been applied here for the analysis of data. The results show that livelihood pattern has a great impact on women empowerment. The authors measured women empowerment in terms of its four attributes, such as ‘decision making within the family’, ‘women’s freedom of movement’, ‘women’s political participation’ and ‘women’s control over economic resources.

Key words: Occupational Pattern of Women, Fuzzy Set Technique, Empowerment

Introduction

The concern about women empowerment is a global issue.  Empowerment can be defined in terms of power to represent people’s possibilities and options, and to act on them, the power within that enables people to have the courage to do things they never thought themselves to be capable of and the power that comes from working alongside others to claim what is rightfully theirs (Eyben et al., 2008). Women empowerment can be represented in terms of certain key elements such as women’s power, autonomy, self-reliance, entitlement, participation and the process of capacity building and awareness which are necessary for their upliftment (Panda, 2000).
