Original in Assamese: Hangmiji Hanse
Translation: Bibekananda Choudhury

Rocks are everything for us

Our first refuse had been the rock caves
That reared us like a father
Our first weapon had been rock
That gave us confidence, undaunted courage
And food security

Our pace was accelerated
By the sparks of fire from friction of stones
That pace became awesome on round rocks
We named it human civilisation

Out first artform are on the cavewalls
Unmarred history of human evolution
Followed by architecture, sculpture and what not
Modern roads, houses, metals, oilfields
Civilization comes to a halt without rock

Without rocks the flowing rivers do not meander
There won’t be rhythmic dancing steps – the soulful tunes
There won’t be the curves of lively streams

Rocks to vent anger
Rocks to block roads
Rocks to register protest

Rock is the Talc of beauty treatment
Rocks to decorate drawing rooms
Rocks to build monuments
Rocks to protect towns and cities

We seek divine benediction in rock
We pay obeisance to rock
We pass excreta on rocks
We erect stages on rocks
We learnt alphabets on rocks

Gold, silver, ores, diamonds all are rocks
Paeans of creation is rock
Wide terrain of civilization is rock

Rock hard body, rocky heart
Rock covered mountains

Rock rock rock
Layer by layer
Sedimentary rock
