CHILDHOOD IN MOM'S SHADOW

Original in Assamese: Dr Lokesh Boro
Translation: Bibekananda Choudhury

My mom
Who maintained accounts
By etching lines
On earthen walls
Understood very well
Value of education

As she observed me
Reciting theorems of mathematics
Looking at the earthen wall
In my childhood
Mother warned me
Don't do sums on earthen walls
Do it on plain paper with an ink pen
Neither be like your mother
Nor be like your father
Making transactions on thumb impressions
Just study and study
