OLD TALES

Original in Assamese: Sailen Das
Translation: Bibekananda Choudhury

A night
An old novel

On a night
Resting my head on the wooden chair
Discovered the Earth on a page

A bygone day and a little thought
The delectable ones are brief
But,
On a second thought
Everything feels good at some point of time

Everything
It is said
Bears a history
Every poem has a past too
Just as every sadness has a pleasant taste
Every person is associated with
Some kind of mystery

As one thinks
Resting the head on the wooden chair
It feels like poem
Feels like commitment

Now spring has descended by the wooden chair
Dust has dressed up with mekhala chaddar
Of Assam silk
The Sun has put on a red earring

Strange
Time do not but use a undergarment

You tell me a story
I’d listen to
Sometimes I’d understand
Sometimes I’d forget eve.
