THE SPRING TIME FESTIVAL SAGRAMISAWA AND BIHU OF TIWA TRIBE IN ASSAM: A STUDY

Abstract
Sagramisawa is the Spring time festival of the Tiwas which is mainly observed by the hill side Tiwas. On the other hand, the Plain Tiwas observed Bohag Bihu during that time like the Assamese people. Sagramisawa is an agricultural Spring time festival. Tiwa people are based on agriculture. Thus most of the festivals observed by them are mainly related to agriculture. Among those, Sagramisawa is a noteworthy one where songs and dance forms the integral part of it. Assamese people observed Bihu as the spring time festival which is common to the people of Assam. Like the Assamese people Tiwas of Assam also celebrate their spring time Bihu festival but there are some difference between the Bihus observed by the Assamese people and the Tiwas. Plain Tiwas follow the Assamese people while observing the Bihus but the Tiwas settled at the hills and the foothill areas have some dissimilarity in observing the Sagramisawa festival. Through the research article it is an attempt to highlight about the spring time festival sagramisawa and bihu of tiwa tribe in assam.

1.Introduction

Bihu is the main festival of Assam. From the distant past to the present time, Bihu is celebrated by the various languages speaking people of Assam. Assam is an agricultural state and that is why every festival held here is somehow related to agriculture. People celebrate the three main Bihus in relation to agriculture. In Assam, spring time agricultural festival is meant for Bohag bihu. Although this spring time agricultural festival is celebrated by the Assamese people, there are some people who according to their own tradition celebrate some other agricultural festival. Some of the agricultural festival held during spring season are- ‘Ali Aai lrigang of Mising, Boisagu by Bodo people, Bisu of Deories, Busu of Dimasha, Baikho of Rabha and Dumahipe of Karbi etc.

Tiwa is one of the prominent tribe residing in Assam since early times. At present, they settled in the district of Karbi Aanglong, Nogaon, Morigaon, Kamrup, Dhemaji (in few places) Lakhimpur of Assam and also in Jayantia hills. Earlier, Tiwa people were known as Lalung, but now a day, they prefer to introduce themselves as Tiwa. They say that the Lalung name is given to them by non Tiwa people.
