A STUDY OF THE CAUSES OF GRADUAL WANES, PROBLEMS AND PROSPECTS OF THE PUPPETRY PERFORMING ART FORM OF ASSAM IN THE CONTEXT OF MASS COMMUNICATION

Abstract

Assam is very much wealthy in folk communication forms with various categories- myths, legends, folk tales, ballads, riddles, proverbs, folk drama, folk dance, folk painting, and many more. Use of folk media can be most effective in changing the unscientific attitudes and superstitions inherited as a part of tradition by the people in mostly rural areas. In the course of folk performance, folk media transmit information and project ideas that may influence masses as well as entertain them. Every folk performing art form itself is a medium of communication because it is directly linked to its own audience. There are so many folk theatre in Assam, though, there is no significant attempt has been made to study these mediums in the light of mass communication. Here, this study is a sincere effort to know the one of the ancient Assamese folk performing art form Putula Naach (Puppetry) both in its glorious eras of past and the present scenario surrounded by the other new forms and also to study the various problems and causes of the present critical conditions mass media without the heritage folk arts. Puppetry, One of the most popular folk performing arts is closely connected with the soil, linked up with the customs and belief of the people. It is based on the socio-religious life of the people. Over all, Puppetry is a rich form of culture in comparison to some vernacular art. Undoubtedly, India is the home to puppetry. Since the people in India do not have strong accessibility to mass media channels and they are illiterates, puppetry has still opportunities to be instrumental for disseminating social messages for a cause. However, in the age of internet and cyber or society run with machines, the role of puppetry medium arises as an issue of discussion among the puppeteers, researchers and academicians. The research has made a sincere attempt to re-define puppetry as means of mass communication and to find out the real cause of its slow wanes, its problems and prospects to re-establish and uplift.
