Abstract
This paper looks into
certain issues pertaining to the festivals of the Misings in Assam. The
discussion is limited to the two main festivals – Ali A:ye Lígang and Po:rag
among the second highest scheduled tribes of Assam. Celebration of these
festivals among them of late witnesses certain changes due to the influence of
people’s mobility toward town or due to the influence of globalisation. Mising
people might be taking pride of their celebration because of wide spectrum of
visitors and guests being surprised at experiencing new things in their
ritualistic presentation. But certain aspects very much anti elements to the
pristine beauty of these festivals have been noticed. Certain additions during
the celebration of these festivals may be the demand of the time but some responsible
persons and intellectual bodies of the Misings express their concern in this
regard and put forward their ideas for the betterment of the society. The
Misings try their best to preserve their rituals festivals etc. with certain
amount of elements added which do not stain the overall setup of these
celebrations. Thus paper examines how the few unnoticed and overlooked facets have
intruded into their celebration and suggest some measures to eradicate them.
