Abstract
Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) was one of the modern novelists who adopted the stream of consciousness mode of narration in her fictions. This method enables a subjective reconciliation of the characters with the outside reality. As an eminent forerunner of feminism and being women, Virginia Woolf has tried to give the women’s point of view in her novels. She relies more on intuition than on reason. Woolf deeply resented the role of women in Victorian society, wherein to nurture, preserve and repair were the sacred duties of well brought up young ladies. In the 20th century, Virginia Woolf was one of the prominent writers who produced literature by asserting her female identity. Through her works she has tried to depict the inherent politics of patriarchy, especially through her essays A Room of One’s Own (1927) and Three Guineas (1938). In her essay A Room of One’s Own, she held the view that economic independence was a fundamental element for women to break away men’s control. Woolf in a way tries to let feminine influence act freely both within society and within the individual. From her point of view, masculine and feminine consciousness both existed in one person mind. Instead of being opposites these two elements should live in harmony. Woolf terms ‘androgyny’ to the mind where there is a perfect balance between both the masculine and the feminine elements. The main objective behind this research article is to study how Virginia Woolf established herself as a feminist writer in her portrayal of the women characters in To The Lighthouse (1927).
