The 40th edition of Karbi Youth Festival is scheduled to be held during 15-19 February, 2014 at Taralangso, a village with graceful cultural spirits, situated at the outskirt of Diphu town of Karbi Anglong district in Assam. This has been the largest ever ethnic festival in the North-East India since 1974.

Karbi Youth Festival comes in the mid-February every year reclaiming own ethnicity,
uniting people in cultural synchronization and crafting cultural ethos across the Karbi Anglong district in particular and the state of Assam as well as the North-East Region as a whole, reminding people of the country and abroad not to forget this part of the globe. Therefore, this mega event is the best opportunity to be in touch with the native people, to understand about the culture and heritage including the aspects of material culture of communities of North-East India.

It was inthe year 1974, a few enthusiastic Karbi youth met together at Diphu Karbi Club and for the first time decided to hold a youth festival at Diphu, the district headquarter of Karbi Anglong district in Assam. With that conceptual beginning, the cultural movement resulted to be a big reality, where thousands of participants, lakhs of visitors come together and witness the Karbi Youth Festival, recognized as the largest ethnic festival today in the North-Eastern part of India. Karbi Youth Festival has been organizing by Karbi Cultural Society since 1977. Since inception Karbi Youth Festival has been working only on donations in honest enthusiasm without big corporate patronage.
Including Assam primarily, Karbi people are inclusively found inhabiting in Manipur, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, etc. embracing the culture and traditions of India. Karbi is one of the largest tribal communities in Assam. The demography of Karbi people in Assam covers the districts of Karbi Anglong, Kamrup, Morigaon, Sonitpur, and so on.

The initial time in organizing the festival was quite struggling because of lack of proper channel to patronage and only the enthusiasm worked upbeat with the whole hearted support of the general public, but such a way ahead, Karbi Youth Festival turned to be a big Annual Event, which remained unabated for the past 39 years.

Karbi Youth Festival, pioneer of all ethnic festivals, becomes the prime event in Karbi Anglong to witness the dissemination of Karbi Heritage and Culture. The 40th edition of Karbi Youth Festival is scheduled to be held during 15-19 February, 2014 at Taralangso, Diphu, Karbi Anglong district in Assam.

The venue of the festival with about 300 acre stretches; Taralangso beholds gracefully a raw natural ambiance of mother earth adorned with green hills and elegant streams. Hence, the present venue is an ideal paradise for holding of Karbi Youth Festival, although there needs continued initiatives for preservation, documentation, research and promotion of the rich cultural heritage of Karbi people of Assam.

At present the Karbi Youth Festival has been curved a niche as a beautiful platform for exhibition and promotion of art and culture not only for Karbis, but also for all communities of Assam and the North-East.

Festival Highlights

In this fantastic cultural extravaganza from the Opening Ceremony to Valedictory function,beginning from 15-19 February, 2014, including thousands of folk musicians, a number of participants in various events are anticipated to perform and make the time meaningful with the countless audiences.

Taralangso Music Festival, from the year 2010,is the added zeal in the festival where folk dance & music performance including melodious folk musical instruments, singers giving spectacular enjoyment are the attractions to thousands of audiences.Rock Contest organized with the international appeal now become the crowd puller in the festival.

Taralangso Art Carnival with an ethnic village is another significant feature offering exhibition of folk art & crafts, contemporary art, paintings, handloom & handicrafts, photography, etc.

Ethnic Food stalls give unforgettable taste and experience to the visitors. The delicious ethnic recipes like pork meat steamed in bamboo, sticky rice, and many more food items give spirit to every person to visit again and again.

Moreover, traditional games & sports competition, adventure sports competition, ethnic fashion show, workshops, theatre and drama performance, cinema show, book fair, etc. are included in the festival.

Karbi Cultural Society

After three years of celebration, Karbi Cultural Society was born in the year 1977 and the responsibility of organizing the Karbi Youth Festival comes on the hands of the Society. Since then, the Society has been organizing the Festival with the mission to promote and share the heritage and culture of all people of Karbi descent with the global community. Taralangso, a green surrounding village, was fixed as the permanent venue of the festival. Generally the Festival is organized week-long covering all sections of the people of Karbi Anglong and the state of Assam.

Karbi Youth Festival is the celebration of joyful expression of Karbi people in search of cultural identity. Now this festival is not merely a festival concentrated to Karbi community, but instead, a festival representing the all sections of people and communities of the Nroth-East.

Karbi Youth Festival is not only an entertaining event, but instead, an educational experience and cultural exchange. The Festival honours every culture, every tradition and every community. Karbi Youth Festival encourages individuals from all ethnic backgrounds to share with the beauty of rich history, art, music and foods of Karbi community.

How to reach Taralangso, Diphu, Karbi Anglong?

Taralangso is situated at a distance of about 4 km from Diphu town. Diphu is reachable vide road, rail and air. Dimapur is the nearest airport with about one hour driving distance. The Diphu railway station is well connected of trains. On the other hand, the road travel is well connected either from Nagaon or Golaghat or Dimapur. For accommodation, Guest Houses, Hotels in Diphu town and Government Bungalows around the venue is available.
