Original in Assamese: Naren Nritom Das
Translation: Pranami Bania

The long desired dream is washed away,
By the turbulent flood of the saoun1 month.
There remain no traces of the granary house,
Does the dheki2 remain there or not?
Treasure of Life’s struggle
The much loved pair of cows
Were lost while grazing,
Just now the ducks were playing in the courtyard.
Can’t make out where they are gone?

Still remember my mother and grandmom’s saying...
Today my birthplace is in the heart of the vast river.
Erosion makes us remain here.
It is because of erosion, our address is here now.
The past’s address is emerged in the memories lane.

In sleepless night...
Will count the stars of the sky,
Will write poems
Will forget hunger
No paper and pen
Will write in one’s heart.

If caught by disease
What shall we do then?
Will take the name of God
Or count the minutes of death

Got the news of the approaching of a boat after some time,
The plantain raft will be released
The plantain raft is very beloved and very own.
It is the partner of the whole life.
At the time of riding the boat, eyes moistened.

Paddy fields...
What ails them?
The dream of the paddy seedling is a lost one for many years.
Turning it into reality is impossible.

Caught in a slight slumber
I saw...
Two helping hands
A new house is rising its head
A new World is grounding itself...

Note: 1.Saoun - It is the month of monsoon according to Assamese calender, falls in between July and August. 2.Dheki - Foot-operated thrasher
